Protecting your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and who we share it with.

It covers the website calmlywriter.com, the online editor, the desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, and the Calmly Writer for Android app.

The short version

We do not collect, store or transmit anything you write. Your documents stay on your own device and never reach our servers. There is no account to create, and the apps contain no advertising and no tracking.

The desktop and Android apps

Both apps work directly with the files on your own device. Your documents, your automatic backups and your previous versions are stored locally and are never sent to us.

Android device backups. Android can include an app's data in the backup that Google provides for your device. If you have that backup switched on — it is on by default on most phones — the documents you have open, your automatic backups and your previous versions are copied to your own Google account, and are restored automatically when you set up a new phone or reinstall the app. This is a function of Android, not something Calmly Writer does: the copy travels between your device and Google, never to us, and since Android 9 it is encrypted end to end with your device's screen lock, so Google cannot read it either. You can switch it off in your device settings, under Google › Backup.

The Android app makes no network connections at all. It sends no usage information, and it does not need to look for updates because Google Play delivers those. If you look at the permission list on Google Play you will see a network permission: it comes from the framework the app is built with, which serves the editor to a component inside your own device. It is not used to send anything anywhere.

The desktop app connects to calmlywriter.com for one purpose only: to check whether a new version of the application is available, and to download and install it. That request carries no information about you or your documents.

The online editor

Nothing you write in the online editor reaches our servers. The automatic saving happens in your own browser's storage, which we cannot access. Clearing your browser data removes it.

The website

We use Plausible Analytics to measure visits to calmlywriter.com. Plausible does not use cookies, does not collect personal data and does not track visitors across websites — it reports only aggregate figures such as page views and referring sites. We run it on our own infrastructure, so those figures are not shared with a third-party analytics company.

Purchases

We do not process payments ourselves.

• Desktop license: purchases are handled by FastSpring, which acts as the merchant of record and collects the billing information needed to complete the sale under its own privacy policy. We receive the email address associated with the purchase, so that we can send you your license key and help you if you contact us about it.
• Android app: purchases are handled by Google Play under Google's own privacy policy. We do not receive your payment details.

Information we share with third parties

We do not sell, rent or share your personal information with third parties. The only companies that process any data on our behalf are the payment providers named above.

Your rights

Because the apps collect nothing, there is usually nothing for us to delete. If you bought a desktop license and want the email address associated with it removed from our records, write to [email protected] and we will do it.

The security of your information

We take steps to ensure that your information is treated securely and in accordance with this Privacy Policy. Unfortunately, the Internet cannot be guaranteed to be 100% secure, and we cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information you provide to us. We do not accept liability for unintentional disclosure.

By using calmlywriter.com, you agree that we may communicate with you electronically regarding security, privacy, and administrative issues relating to your use of the Site. If we learn of a security system’s breach, we may attempt to notify you electronically by posting a notice on the Site.

Links to other sites

Our Services may contain links to other websites and services, e.g. to Google’s services. Any information that you provide on or to a third-party website or service is provided directly to the owner of the website or service and is subject to that party’s privacy policy. Our Privacy Policy does not apply to such websites or services and we’re not responsible for the content, privacy or security practices and policies of those websites or services. To protect your information we recommend that you carefully review the privacy policies of other websites and services that you access.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

Any information that we collect is subject to the privacy policy in effect at the time such information is collected. We may, however, modify and revise this Privacy Policy from time to time. You understand and agree that you will be deemed to have accepted the updated Privacy Policy if you use the Services after the updated Privacy Policy is posted on the Services. If at any point you do not agree to any portion of the Privacy Policy then in effect, you must immediately stop using the Services.
