The Calmly Writer manifesto

A writing app without AI

Calmly Writer is a tool to help you write, not to write for you. It has no AI assistant, and it isn't getting one. Here's why.

  1. Where we draw the line

A spell checker helps. So does a word count, and the version history can save you an afternoon's work. What we won't put into Calmly Writer is anything that generates sentences, rewrites them or offers you an “improved” version of what you just typed.

At that point it isn't helping you write anymore. It's writing for you.

  2. Looking for the word is part of writing

We believe writing is how you find out what you think. The moments when the word won't come, or when you rewrite a sentence four times because it still doesn't fit, aren't wasted time. Quite often that's exactly where the idea becomes clear. If a machine fills the gap the moment it opens, you skip that part.

  3. Nobody finishes your sentences

Calmly Writer doesn't autocomplete what you type or suggest swapping a word for a “better” one. It has no opinion on your tone, either. A suggestion, even a good one, pulls you out of what you were thinking, and text written by accepting suggestions ends up sounding like everyone else's.

We'd rather your odd sentences stayed odd.

  4. What you write is your business

Your writing never reaches us. The apps save your documents as files on your computer or phone, and the online editor keeps them in your browser's storage. You don't need an account.

Since we don't have a copy of what you write, we couldn't read it, sell it or train an AI model on it even if we wanted to. The apps have no ads and send no usage data. If you want the details, they're in the privacy policy.

  5. Your documents are ordinary files

Calmly Writer opens and saves plain old files: .txt, .md, .docx, .html. You can keep them in a Dropbox or Google Drive folder, copy them anywhere or open them in another program. If you stop using Calmly Writer one day, your documents are still there.

  6. Nothing to distract you

There are no streaks to keep up and nothing reminding you to come back. While you write, the interface hides, and focus mode dims everything except the paragraph you're on. The idea is that you forget there's a program in front of you.

  7. You pay once

You pay for Calmly Writer once and that's it: no subscription, no AI credits to top up. It's kept going by the licenses people buy because they use it, not by your attention or your data.
